Farmina Cat Food Review

Pet owners are becoming increasingly conscious about what they feed their furry companions. While earlier, most would pick up generic pet food from the shelves, these days they do good research on the background of the company and look up the ingredients before purchasing the product. There is a huge demand for pet food made from natural ingredients, free from artificial substances. There are several pet food companies that have been manufacturing natural and nutritious food for dogs and cats for years but have come into the limelight only recently.

Farmina is one such company that has established itself as one of the leading pet food manufacturers in the world. Farmina specializes in a scientific diet for cats and dogs, which provides the maximum nutrition and keeps diseases at bay. All their products are made from holistic, natural ingredients, safe to consume for all kitties. The Italian company traces its roots back to 1965, when Francesco Russo founded the Russo Mangimi company, specializing in animal nutrition. The business kept growing and was later joined by his sons Angelo and Nicola. In 1999, Angelo Russo, driven by his love for animals, decided to open a new company to focus on a scientific diet for pets, for their all-round health and wellbeing.

Farmina was originally an English company specializing in dog food research, which Angelo Russo partnered with. When the effort was a success, they invested in more developments to make the company known worldwide. Farmina has also collaborated with several prestigious institutes, including the Animal Nutrition of the University of Naples Federico II. Angelo Russo also set up the Farmina Vet Research, which is a team of veterinarians and animal nutritionists that work on formulating a scientific diet for pets, based on their bodily systems and the feedback received from thousands of veterinarians whom Farmina has worked with.

The efforts of Farmina have been published in scientific journals like the British Journal of Nutrition of Cambridge University. There is a growing demand for Farmina products worldwide, and the company keeps developing their plants to keep up with the changing times.

Farmina understands that cats are carnivores, much like their wild counterparts. They need a diet rich in protein to be able to survive and thrive. Grains and gluten are not what they need. That’s the reason why Farmina manufactures cat food free from all kinds of grains, soy, wheat, and corn. All kitties, including the sensitive ones, can safely consume Farmina products. Some of the products do contain certain fruits and vegetables, along with small amounts of spelt and oats, because these have been scientifically proven to be nutritious for cats.

Types of cat food

There are three lines of cat food by Farmina: Vet Life Feline, Natural & Delicious Grain Free Feline, and Matisse.

Vet Life Feline has been developed in partnership with the Animal Nutrition of the University of Naples Federico II.  It is a scientific formula based on the unique needs and physiological patterns of each cat. Each recipe in this line has been created to address particular feline health issues. The recipes in this line include:

Gastrointestinal Feline: If your cat suffers from inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, then this formula has been specially created to help address those issues. This is not only a dietetic food for cats with digestive disorders but also a formula that soothes and heals your kitty’s system. This meal reduces acute intestinal absorption disorders and helps your cat in recovering from gastrointestinal issues with the help of the essential nutrients.

Hepatic Feline: This feed is meant for cats with insufficient liver function. The meal contains a moderate amount of protein for better absorption by cats with liver disorders. Digestible carbohydrates and fatty acids are the other nutrients in this meal. If your cat is recovering from a liver ailment, this food will help her recover well while providing her with the essential nutrition.

Obesity Feline: Do you have an obese cat? If so, then this diet has formulated to help in the reduction of excess weight. Obesity can cause a number of health issues in felines, so you have to give them a diet that does not add to the excess weight. This scientific formula not only prevents the further weight from adding up but also reduces obesity over time.

Hairball Feline: Hairballs are a common problem with cats. Research has found that the proper nutrition can help eliminate the issue. Keeping that in mind, Farmina has created the Hairball Feline formula, which is rich in fiber and fatty acids to reduce the buildup of hairballs.

The Natural & Delicious Grain Free Feline line is made for those cats sensitive to grains and gluten. All the recipes in this line are rich in protein, derived from high-quality sources, fit for human consumption. Besides fish and meat, the food contains fruits and vegetables that are nutritious for felines. This balanced meal is fit for both kittens and adult cats, including those with sensitivities to certain ingredients.

What customers think

Farmina is above average cat food, with the Natural & Delicious Chicken Grain-Free Formula Dry Cat Food on Chewy.com scoring 4.8 out of 5. Almost all the reviews on the site are positive, with 98 percent of the reviewers recommending it to other cat owners. Some of the reviews are as follows:

“We love how this food looks, smells, the Cats LOVE it, I really like that is has a good moisture content to it…not a bag of dust food. You can totally see the quality once you open the bag, and even the bag is good quality Zip Lock kind of bag. Quality all around!” – RussG

“We are a multicat household and our cats seem to feel they are doing us a favor by accepting their food. The situation is also complicated as several suffer from stomatitis which makes eating difficult at times. Not one cat in the house has refused to eat this and all showed great interest when the sack was opened. We think it is a winner!” – Pefh

“This food has high quality ingredients, large percentages of protein and fat compared with most other brands, and some ingredients you don’t find often in cat food, 5 kinds of fruit! I have read that wild cats will eat fruit in the wild sometimes, so it must have some benefit, although they supposedly cannot taste sweet.” – Robin777
